About the Group

Image Dr. James G. McPherson traveled from New York to attend the University of Southern California in 1981. After receiving a degree in chemistry, he attended the Tulane University School of Medicine where he graduated with the dual degree of Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health.

Upon completing his medical education in New Orleans, Dr. McPherson began a five-year internship and residency in general surgery at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City. During this time McPherson worked closely with Dr. George Green, who pioneered the use of the internal mammary artery for coronary artery bypass surgery.

Dr. McPherson returned to USC to complete a three-year fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery. While at USC, he learned complex coronary artery and valve surgery from world-renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Vaughn Starnes and was part of the team that performed surgery on box office superstar and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. In addition, Dr. McPherson studied the surgical treatment of esophageal and pulmonary disorders with Dr. Tom DeMeester, also recognized worldwide as a leader in this field.

At the invitation of Dr. Starnes, Dr. McPherson joined the faculty of the Keck USC School of Medicine in 1998 as Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. McPherson was given the task of bringing the University Hospital’s high quality, cutting edge technology to USC’s community hospitals.

Dr. McPherson has a proven clinical track record of innovation both in and outside of the operating room. As Associate Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Centinela Hospital’s Tommy Lasorda Heart Institute (TLHI), Dr. McPherson supervised a complete renovation of the cardiac surgical operating rooms, a new cardiovascular intensive care unit and the post surgical telemetry units. Dr. McPherson brought tireless energy to all aspects of the administrative and marketing processes at Centinela. Dr. McPherson has a philosophy of bringing excellent surgical skills to the frontline of medical care: the community hospital.

In 2002, Dr. McPherson began a private practice in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery and now serves as medical director of the Los Angeles Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Group. The group is committed to the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac, thoracic and peripheral vascular diseases, the number one health problem in the United States. The Group has offices in Downtown Los Angeles and Torrance.

Dr. McPherson was appointed Medical Director of Cardiovascular Surgery at St. Vincent Medical Center in 2007 and is the primary cardiac surgeon for Transfusion Free Medicine and Surgery Program. These techniques make it possible to do complex cardiac surgical procedures without blood transfusions. Under Dr. McPherson’s leadership, St. Vincent has become an attractive center for new, cutting edge technology for cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery.

Dr. McPherson maintains an interest in continuing his medical education, and serves as a mentor for young physicians, as well as students aspiring to a career in medicine. He is an active member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons, the premier academic and clinical organization for surgeons in the United States and Canada.

Dr. McPherson has made numerous television, radio and print media appearances speaking about cardiovascular health, lung cancer prevention and treatment and resuming active living after heart surgery. An avid fan of sports, music and cinema, Dr. McPherson has coached basketball in the Arcadia Youth Basketball league for four years. Dr. McPherson has three children and resides in Los Angeles.

Image Dr. Philippe H. Lemoine attended Carleton College in 1983. Following completion of a B.A. in biology he attended George Washington University where he earned a Doctor of Medicine degree. He then traveled to Los Angeles where he completed a six year residency in general surgery at Martin-Luther King/Charles R. Drew Medical Center. During this time Dr. Lemoine conducted research in cardiopulmonary transplant preservation techniques with world-renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Hillel Laks at UCLA.

Following his general surgery residency he was awarded a one year fellowship in Trauma/Critical Care at Harbor/UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California. During that year, in addition to his responsibilities with trauma and in the ICU, he was an assistant clinical professor of surgery, conducted research on abdominal compartment syndrome, and successfully completed his board certification in general surgery.

He then completed a two year fellowship in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at the University of California/Davis under Dr. David Follette. Along with training in complex coronary artery, valve, and off-pump cardiac surgery, Dr. Lemoine obtained experience with video-assisted esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. Dr. Lemoine completed his board certification in thoracic surgery and entered private practice in Hot Springs, Arkansas in 2001 where he performed more than 200 cardiac cases per year, in addition to general vascular and thoracic surgery.

For two years in a row, Dr. Lemoine’s hospital was awarded a five-star rating in heart surgery - including coronary artery bypass and heart valve procedures - to rank first in Arkansas and in the top five percent nationally, by Health Grades.

An accomplished vocalist before entering medicine, Dr. Lemoine still maintains an active interest in the arts. He is an avid amateur athlete often competing in cycling and running marathon races. He considers his greatest accomplishment to be his family which includes his wife and one daughter.
